Choice Hotels has spiked award pricing for Japanese properties by as much as 200 percent, eroding what had been one of the program's best redemption sweet spots. Comfort Suites Tokyo Kanda doubled from 10,000 points per night to 20,000 points per night, while Comfort Inn Tokyo Roppongi climbed to 30,000 points per night (per AwardWallet). The increases are concentrated in central Tokyo. Properties in Osaka and Fukuoka have seen minimal movement, with most still pricing at 8,000 to 10,000 points per night.
Choice Privileges members have historically redeemed points at an average of 1.24 cents per point, driven in large part by reliable 8,000-point Japan redemptions. At the new 20,000 to 30,000 point levels, that value equation shifts dramatically. Choice did not respond to requests for comment on the changes.
The devaluation lands as Choice Privileges continues to work through transfer-ratio cuts announced in April 2026. Citi's ThankYou Points transfer ratio to Choice moved from 1:1 to 1:1.5 effective April 19, 2026 (per AwardWallet). Wells Fargo Rewards still transfer at 1:2, meaning a 20,000-point Choice property would cost 10,000 Wells Fargo Rewards points.
The pricing increases appear selective for now. Central Tokyo bears the brunt, but secondary cities remain stable. AwardWallet will continue monitoring whether Choice extends these increases to more properties across Japan. Before booking, travelers should check award pricing for exact dates and compare against cash rates.
