What Citi TY actually gets you
Citi ThankYou Rewards is the only US transferable that reaches American Airlines AAdvantage. That's the headline. After Citi added American on July 27, 2025 (The Points Guy; One Mile at a Time) and Bilt's prior AAdvantage partnership ended 2024-06-24, Citi is the sole transferable path to the oneworld redemptions American gates: LATAM business to South America, the Cathay First space that's still cheaper on AAdvantage's chart than on Asia Miles, JAL premium cabin via the AAdvantage award table. If you fly American or want oneworld access without paying their co-brand annual fees, Citi is structurally important in a way no other major issuer is.
The full partner count is 21: 16 airlines (including Virgin Red, categorized as Independent) and 5 hotels. Shop Your Way is the 22nd partner on Citi's official list but it's retail-only, so we exclude it from award-travel calculations. Mid-pack relative to Capital One (18) and Amex MR (20), but Citi's list is differentiated where it counts. After Amex MR's March 1, 2026 devaluation to 5:4, only Citi, Capital One, and Bilt still reach Cathay Asia Miles at 1:1. And after Amex MR's June 30, 2026 Etihad Guest cutoff, those same three are the only transferables left reaching Etihad at all (Frequent Miler, dated cutoff; The Points Guy; cross-checked against our 2026-05-17 partner audit).
Most ratios are 1:1, with a few exceptions to know before transferring. Emirates Skywards at 5:4 (the same post-September-2025 devaluation that hit Amex MR; Capital One sits at 4:3 and Bilt is the standout at 1:1), JetBlue at 1:1 on Strata Premier or Elite but 5:4 on limited-earning cards, and Accor at 2:1 on hotels. The bigger structural caveat is Citi-specific: transfer ratios split by card tier. The 1:1 numbers below are for Citi Strata Premier, Citi Strata Elite, and the closed-to-new-applications Prestige. If you only hold a Custom Cash, Double Cash, or Strata-without-Premier, most partners drop to 1:0.7 (TPG). The fix is mixing: earn on Custom Cash for the 5% category, transfer through a Strata Premier you keep alongside. The annual fee on Strata Premier is $95 (AwardWallet).

How to actually use Citi TY
- Use the American partnership when no one else can. Citi → American AAdvantage at 1:1 (Strata Premier or Elite) opens redemptions other transferables can't touch directly. LATAM business class to South America is still 57,500 AAdvantage miles one-way off-peak. Cathay First saver from JFK to Hong Kong is still priced lower on the AAdvantage chart than on Cathay's own Asia Miles chart for certain dates. If you want to book AAdvantage awards without earning them through paid flights or the co-brand cards, Citi is the only transferable path.
- Pick the partner before the destination. Same logic as MR and UR. Tokyo in First: Virgin Atlantic to ANA at 85,000 Flying Club miles one-way from JFK or 72,500 from SFO/ORD (our ANA First sweet-spot page, last audited 2026-04-15). Europe in business: Turkish Miles&Smiles at 65K to Istanbul, or Flying Blue promo awards at 45K one-way when the monthly cycle aligns (our Flying Blue promo page). Asia in First: Singapore Suites at 155K KrisFlyer, or Cathay First at 125K Asia Miles. Each of those Citi reaches at 1:1.
- Wyndham at 1:1 is the underrated Citi-only hotel play. Wyndham's 7,500-point flat-rate tier covers Super 8, Days Inn, Wingate, and Hawthorn budget properties regardless of cash price (Wyndham Rewards limited-time deals page, accessed 2026-05-17). The 15,000-point tier covers Vacasa entire-home rentals (no per-night cleaning fees on the points side, which is the actual value here). At a 1:1 Citi ratio that's 7,500 TY for a room or 15,000 TY for a vacation rental. Meaningful for road trips, overflow nights, or last-minute family bookings.
- Confirm availability before you transfer. Transfers are permanent. Use the radar or seats.aero to verify award space, then move points. Most airline transfers post instantly to 24 hours; Aeroplan-style overnight delays don't apply because Citi doesn't reach Aeroplan. Hotel transfers (Wyndham, Accor) take 1-2 business days.
- Move only what you need. Transfer the exact booking total plus a small buffer. Orphaned partner balances are hard to use, especially at smaller programs like Thai Royal Orchid Plus or EVA where redemption inventory is sparse outside Asia.
- Don't transfer through a no-annual-fee Citi card if a Strata Premier is available in your stack. The 1:0.7 vs 1:1 gap on partner transfers is a ~30% value cut. If your earning strategy is Custom Cash for the 5% category, the playbook is: earn on Custom Cash, pool into the shared TY account at a Strata Premier, transfer out at 1:1. The $95 Strata Premier annual fee pays back fast against a single 50K transfer that would otherwise be 35K at no-fee-card ratios.
What Citi TY does not transfer to
Citi's gaps are different from Amex and Chase. The big ones:
- World of Hyatt. Same gap as Amex MR. Hyatt is the highest-value hotel transfer in the US market and only Bilt and Chase UR reach it.
- Aeroplan. No Lufthansa, Swiss, or Austrian US-to-Europe business via Aeroplan's distance-based chart. Workaround: transfer to Avianca LifeMiles or Singapore KrisFlyer for the same Star Alliance metal at different chart pricing.
- United MileagePlus directly. Use Aeroplan (which Citi doesn't reach), Avianca, or Singapore for United partner-priced metal.
- British Airways Avios. Both UR and MR reach BA Avios at 1:1; Citi does not. If short-haul European Avios redemptions are core (BA's distance-based chart is excellent for under-650-mile flights), Citi alone isn't enough.
- Alaska Mileage Plan. Bilt-only among transferables.
- Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards. Citi's hotel partners are Wyndham, Accor, and the three luxury programs (Leading Hotels, Preferred, Choice). For mid-tier branded hotel needs, Amex (Marriott + Hilton + Choice) or Chase (Hyatt + IHG + Marriott) fill the gap. If you're booking a one-off paid stay at a mid-tier branded property and the Citi ecosystem can't reach it on points, comparing cash rates at Hotels.com is the path of least resistance.
Cross-referenced against every transferable currency's partner list on 2026-05-17. If Hyatt or Aeroplan are central to your strategy, treat Citi as a complement to Chase UR or Bilt, not a foundation.
What can go wrong
- The 1:0.7 no-annual-fee trap. A Custom Cash holder transferring 10,000 TY directly to American gets 7,000 AAdvantage miles, not 10,000. Pair with a Strata Premier or Elite to unlock 1:1. This is the single biggest mistake new Citi cardholders make.
- Emirates at 5:4 is real. Same post-September-2025 devaluation that hit MR holders. Citi has no special exemption (Capital One is worse at 4:3; only Bilt holds the line at 1:1). 163,500 Skywards for First to Dubai (per the distance-based fixed chart) now costs 204,375 Citi TY at 5:4, rather than 163,500 at the pre-devaluation 1:1.
- Etihad-via-Amex ends June 30, 2026. After that, only Citi, Capital One, and Bilt reach Etihad (Frequent Miler dated cutoff; confirmed against TPG and two other tier-2 sources during our 2026-05-17 partner audit). If MR is your primary stack and Etihad redemptions are part of your medium-term plan, growing a Citi balance now is the prudent move.
- Citi transfer bonuses are rare. Citi runs bonuses far less frequently than Amex or Chase. Historically about one per quarter, and often to less-useful partners like Wyndham or Choice. Don't sit on time-sensitive transfers waiting for a Citi bonus that may never come. The base 1:1 math is already good enough on most partners.
- High-cash-value redemptions still need trip protection. A 130,800-mile Skywards First-to-Dubai booking represents real cash equivalent at retail. For trips at that scale, trip insurance via World Nomads We receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is not a recommendation to buy travel insurance. is worth considering. Single-trip policies cover medical evacuation, trip interruption, and cancellation gaps that credit card travel coverage often misses, especially on the long-haul international itineraries the high-cpp Citi redemptions point you toward.
May 2026 firsthand
Zero active Citi transfer bonuses as of 2026-05-17 (our live transfer-bonus tracker). The bigger calendar item is the Etihad cutoff on June 30 from Amex MR. After that date, only Citi, Capital One, and Bilt reach Etihad Guest. Among premium-fee issuers that leaves Citi and Capital One, and Etihad's First Apartment award space has been more available than usual in May (our availability pipeline, week of 2026-05-12). Causes are unclear; one plausible read is MR holders pulsing through balances ahead of the deadline. If Etihad is part of your medium-term plan, growing a Citi TY balance now positions you for the post-June 30 environment.
The other quiet shift: American AAdvantage as a Citi partner just turned 10 months old. The novelty of "Citi has American" has worn off; the durability is more interesting. Citi's previous American partnership ended in 2018 (TPG history), and the 2025 reintroduction signals American is comfortable carrying both the Citi co-brand earning relationship and third-party transfers. Different from British Airways' or Hyatt's exclusive-issuer stances. Worth watching whether AAdvantage's saver-award web availability tightens in response to the new demand source, though through ten months public-search availability has appeared steady from our checks.
Common questions
- Does Citi ThankYou transfer to American AAdvantage?
- Yes, at 1:1 for Strata Premier, Premier, Prestige, or Strata Elite cardholders. Citi is the only major US transferable currency that partners with American AAdvantage. The partnership launched 2025-07-27. AAdvantage is not reachable from Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, or Bilt Rewards (the prior Bilt-AAdvantage partnership ended 2024-06-24).
- What's the Citi ThankYou transfer ratio?
- Citi ThankYou transfers at 1:1 if you hold Strata Premier, Premier, Prestige, or Strata Elite. Cardholders of the Citi Custom Cash, Double Cash, or Strata-without-Premier transfer at 1:0.7, meaning 1,000 points become only 700 partner miles. The workaround is to earn on the no-fee cards for their 5% categories and transfer through a Strata Premier kept on the same account.
- Does Citi ThankYou transfer to Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles?
- Yes, at 1:1. Turkish Miles&Smiles is one of the strongest Star Alliance partner programs for US-to-Istanbul business class (65K saver on Turkish metal nonstop). Citi is one of four US transferable currencies that reach Turkish, alongside Capital One, Bilt, and historically Amex with no current direct path.
- Does Citi ThankYou transfer to Hyatt?
- No. World of Hyatt is a Chase Ultimate Rewards partner. Citi's five hotel partners are Wyndham Rewards, Accor Live Limitless, Choice Privileges, Leading Hotels of the World, and Preferred Hotels and Resorts I Prefer. If Hyatt is central to your travel, Chase UR or Bilt Rewards are the relevant currencies.
- Which airlines partner with Citi ThankYou?
- Citi ThankYou's airline partners include American AAdvantage, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, EVA Air Infinity, JetBlue TrueBlue, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Singapore KrisFlyer, Thai Royal Orchid Plus, Turkish Miles&Smiles, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and Virgin Red. Most transfer at 1:1 with the Strata Premier or Elite ratio.
